Why Naples?
For the past 3,000 years the Bay of Naples has enchanted all visitors who chance upon it, leaving behind inexhaustible traces in art, architecture, music, and culinary traditions from the Greeks and Romans, to the Arabs, Spaniards, and the French Bourbons who conquered this fertile area of the Mediterranean.
Naples is the capital of the Campania region, and it is located along the Tyrrhenian Sea about two hours south of Rome. The region of Campania is best associated with the famous archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as the luxurious vacation destinations of Capri and the Amalfi Coast. This boisterous metropolis along the sea and former capital of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies is, however, much more. Naples has a strong personality and is brimming with vibrant pockets of life that can be found in any narrow alleyway by those who take the time to listen, wander, and explore. The economy of Naples and the Campania region is largely centered on agriculture, afforded by the mild Mediterranean climate, the proximity of volcanic soil, the richness of the sea, abundant spring waters, and four distinct harvest seasons. Visiting the Naples region gives you access to a lesser-explored and more authentic slice of Italian life. In Naples, you can still visit tiny family-run pizzerias where you might be serenaded by a local tammurriata “posteggia” and stay in a quiet pensione along the Sorrento Coast. While Venice, Rome, and Florence often draw the crowds only few visit Naples for an extended period of time. The excursions that we specialize in will immerse you in the local community that has, for centuries, defined Southern Italian hospitality.
Serendipity Southern Italy Travel specializes in tailor-made tours in the Naples/Amalfi Coast/Sorrento region as well as all areas of Southern Italy. We will take you through the entrails of the fated city of Naples to experience the beauty of ancient urban grit. You will learn the art of cheese-making, travel to the tranquil vineyards in the countryside, hike up Mt. Vesuvius with volcanologists, and learn to fish on the island of Procida in the traditional way that has survived in these waters for centuries
